Your prewrite for the "What the World Gains from Optimism" speech is due Friday at the end of Periods 1 & 8. Expectations are listed below.

**I am almost finished giving feedback for persuasive essays. I anticipate being finished with that by this tonight or tomorrow morning. Your final persuasive essay is due Friday of next week, January 13, which also happens to be the end of 2nd quarter.

**DUE TOMORROW: the rough draft version of all your text for NHD (in other words, D-1 of your script if you are doing a documentary or performance, D-1 of your paper, D-1 of the text for your website or exhibit board). I promised that after the break, we would be delving into the hands-on productivity stage of NHD, and that time has come! Do not worry about the process paper yet. We will get to that.

DLP Retake Assignment
**For the most recent test (DLP 29-36), you need to write a story using each one of the DLP words in a way that demonstrates your understanding of the word.  In other words, somewhere in your sentence, the definition of the word should be embedded into the story.  It should be so obvious that only a synonym of the word could be used in the word's place.
**For previous DLP exams, you must make an appointment with me for a study session and then you can retake the test.


 Theme Assignment 12/8
 After reading the poem "Identity" by Julio Noboa Polanco (see below), write what you think the theme of the poem could be.  Then list at least three examples of text evidence that support this theme.

Let them be as flowers
always watered, fed, guarded, admired,
but harnessed to a pot of dirt.

I'd rather be a tall, ugly weed,
clinging on clffs, like an eagle
wind-wavering above high, jagged rocks.

To have broken through surface of stone,
to live, to feel exposed to the madness
of the vast, eternal sky.
To be swayed by the breezes of an ancient sea,
carrying my soul, my seed,

I'd rather be unseen, and if
then shunned by everyone,
than to be a pleasant-smelling flower,

HPL Persuasive Essay
Write a 5-paragraph (or more) essay convincing me of your NHD topic’s historical significance. Using cited research-based information, you need to cover the following:
  • Introduction: Lead, historical context, thesis
  • Body: Short-term and long-term impact on society or policy
  • Conclusion: Restate your thesis and main points of your paper, give a final thought
This must be written and shared with me in Google Drive before you leave for winter break.  Rubric and specific requirements (formatting) will be shared via Google Drive.
