Today Mrs. Wilke discussed imagery some more.  Students read Maya Angelou's "Caged Bird." Individually, as a large group, and in small groups, students identified imagery and discussed the symbols found in the poem.  The assignment for tomorrow is to write a paragraph comparing "Caged Bird" by Maya Angelou to "We Wear the Mask" by Paul Dunbar, being sure to use text evidence to support the claims students establish in the topic sentence of their paragraph.  Both poems are shown in the images below.

Hello Parents and Students! Now that just about every eighth grade student has a working thesis statement for their National History Day project and I have had a chance to look at the calendar for the next couple weeks, I figured it was time for another NHD update.  Below you will find information about NHD Work Nights, Revised NHD Due Dates, Specific Category Information, and a link to the full NHD Rule Book.  Finally, at the very bottom of this post, you will see which categories students have chosen.  (Students, if you notice any errors, please email me as soon as possible!)

NHD WORK NIGHTS

First of all, the following nights will be NHD work nights. Please remember that these nights are supposed to be focused work nights.  Students should bring their NHD materials and be prepared to work.  Also, while I try hard to get everyone's questions answered, if I have multiple people needing my help, I might not get to everyone.

If you would like my help on Wednesdays, come visit me at the Good Fight Community Center on 508 Jay Street, where I tutor every Wednesday.  (Please note, I will not be there on February 14 due to a staff meeting that day.)

Lastly, please note that on Tuesdays, NHD work nights start a little later when on Tuesdays. I hold Student Council meetings until 3:30 on those days. I added a couple Mondays in the mix for February, and there is one Tuesday I am unavailable due to a class that I am taking.

REVISED DUE DATES 

• Wednesday, February 7: All NHD text due
  This means all of the rough draft writing in students' Google Docs should be complete.  If students have a performance or a documentary, their entire script should be completed. If they have a website, all pages/tabs of information should be completed. If they have an exhibit, all of their paragraphs/sections for their exhibit/tri-fold should be completed.
• Wednesday, February 14:  Completed Projects due
  This means students who have papers are finished revising their paragraphs and that students who have documentaries have completed all their editing and uploaded the documentary to both YouTube and Google Drive.  Also, performance students are ready to perform their project for the class.  Exhibit creators should have all the finishing touches on their masterpieces, and websites should be complete as well.
• Wednesday, February 21: Title Page, Process Paper, and Annotated Bibliography are due
  Instructions for the title page and process paper will be given in class the previous week.  (Students who have chosen the Paper category for their NHD project are not required to write a process paper,  however.)  Annotated bibliography should be updated and finalized.
• Wednesday, February 28: School NHD Contest
  Students who are have shown a competent level of research and productivity will be invited to participate in the school-wide NHD competition.  Select projects will be invited to compete in the the Regional NHD Competition in March.

Today we discussed thesis statements in preparation for our NHD topics.  We had some notes, and we viewed two short videos. Below you will see the notes, a link to the videos, and details about the Dr. King field trip assignment option.

OPTIONAL!!! Dr. King field trip assignment:

MANY of you have asked me how you can improve your grade.  Well, here is an option for you.  Attend the Dr. King field trip, write a paragraph about your experience, and if it is well written, I will add 5 points to ONE Reading or Writing assignment of your choice. Here are the details:

1. Get a permission slip from the OFFICE.
2. Bring the permission slip back by Friday, January 12.
3. On January 15, arrive at Lincoln by 5:30 p.m. (This is a non-school day.)
4. Eat pizza if you choose (for free!)
5. Walk over to Viterbo University as a group.
6. Sit as a group.
7. Listen, learn, celebrate about Dr. King. The event begins there at 7 p.m. and highlights speaker Duchess Harris, Ph.D.
8. Walk back to Lincoln as a group, having your parents there by 8:30 p.m. to pick you up. (The building will not be open, so they need to be there.)
9. Write one paragraph about what you learned by Friday, January 19 and give it/email it to me.
10. Get five replacement points.

No new homework was assigned.  Remember that by today, you were supposed to have three "claim tables" prepared, which will help you in the creation of your thesis statement.  Get caught up this weekend if you are behind. Email me with any questions you might have! :)
