Happy 10-11-12, as some of the kids told me today!
Guided Reading: We will briefly review compound sentences before silent reading tomorrow, and there will be a quiz on Monday.
Math: Students made corrections on their math tests today. We will be completing Common Core Investigation 1 tomorrow.
Language Arts: If students have everything turned in, the only assignment they have for the weekend is to study "its" vs. "it's" on noredink.com. There will be a quiz on this on Tuesday at the beginning of Language Arts class. Persuasive business letters were due today, so students who failed to complete this task should be here after school today for an hour (or until they are finished).
Social Studies: My groups have been working on the city planning proposal. Tomorrow, during our extended social studies time, we will have more time to draft the maps and talk the professional city and county planners to get feedback on different ideas. Otherwise, several students STILL need to complete both their map test and their Russia questions test. Since there are only four grades in the gradebook for social studies at the moment, these two grades greatly impact current quarterly grades. I'm available most days after school and before school for students to do this, yet no one has come in to take care of it.

Math: Students will have another day to finish up their math tests from today. They were given 2 hours to complete the test already, but it is a lengthy one! We'll be moving into a new book later this week.
Language Arts: Persuasive business letters are due Thursday by the end of the class. Students who do not have this complete by the end of the class period will have a one-hour detention with me on that day. In order to be considered complete, students must have all five parts of the letter and one labeled examples of each category of persuasion: logos, pathos, and ethos. They will have the next two full class periods to complete this task and should be working on it at home as well.

Ah, Monday, the beginning of another week :)
Guided Reading: Students wrote down a few more notes regarding complex sentences today and then read silently for the last 35 minutes.
Math: TEST TOMORROW! Students asked if I could come up with some practice questions with answers and put them on Edmodo. I told them that I would try to do that some time this evening when I get the chance. If I have time before school is over, I'll get it done then. There were still a handful of students who had not even attempted the first review guide that was given to them. For those students, I discussed the importance of being proactive, responsible, and independent. The test is a long one, and the students will have two hours to complete it tomorrow.
LA: Spooky stories rough drafts were due today. Despite being give an extra 3-day weekend to complete these stories, I still have about 20 students who failed to complete this task. Students have permanent detention with me after school until they are all caught up on the spooky story. Today we moved into the persuasive essay unit, with a discussion on ethos, pathos, and logos. Tomorrow we will learn about the parts of the a business letter, and then rough drafts of students' persuasive business letters are due THIS FRIDAY AT THE END OF THE CLASS PERIOD.
SS: Today I took half of the CC Pod, and we began working in our City Planning groups. I saw quite a bit of good energy and creativity! I'm excited to see what kinds of plans the students come up with. Mr. Sprain took the other half of the students. They are focusing on Asia, with a specific current focus on Hmong New Year, which is this weekend. The groups will "flip-flop" on Wednesday so those who worked on the City Planning projects can learn more about Hmong New Year and vice versa.
Students should be receiving notice about midquarter reports soon. Please email me with any questions that you may have.
